Sick day

Illustration of a stained glass window blending into nature.

Today I was sick. I didn’t do much. Couldn’t really, even if I wanted to.

But I did do two things that I would choose to do on any day, sick or not.

In between sleeping, I drew this.

I also read a bunch of a beautiful and not-what-you-might-think type of book called Yoga by Emmanuel Carrère. There are so many surprising and great nuggets in the book. Here are two I’ve randomly chosen.

‘The purpose of art is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline but is, rather, the gradual, lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity.’

The writer André Malraux relates a discussion he had with an old priest: ‘You’ve spent fifty years listening to people in the secrecy of the confessional, what have you learned about the human soul?’ The priest: ‘Two things. First of all, people are much more unhappy than one thinks. And second, there is no such thing as grown-ups.’

I guess this sick day wasn’t so bad.
