What I learned last week (#177): microwaves are hard

A weekly selection of what I was reading, drawing, writing, and doing.

There was no house news last week, it was all about starting on a new team and starting to do some new work. This caused some funny feelings, like imposter syndrome, to pop-up for me. I’ve learned though that this is normal and even, dare I say, healthy.

I shared my favorite albums of May 2022 last week featuring a LOT artists that were unknown to me a month ago (IDK, Khingz, Obongjaya, Immanuel Wilkins, Quelle Chris). 🤯

I learned that my habit change goals need to be very specific. I did a 100 push ups (almost) every day and I didn’t drink (nearly) any alcohol for the month of May. Here are my goals for June 2022.

Do you use a microwave power button to get a more “even” heat through of your food? No? Don’t know what I’m talking about? Yeah, I might be a bit weird in that regard.

I have some pretty strong desires to achieve and getting things done makes me feel good. Sometimes I love it and sometimes I need it. It’s the needing part where I get into trouble.

I learned that being a birder is simply about seeing birds, and that is pretty cool, especially when there is an irruption of baby birds in your back garden.

Derek Sivers book page now has “332 books, including two new ones I read this week. Sorted with my top recommendations at the top of the list. But you can click the word “newest” to sort them with the newest ones first.” Check out the notes. Lots of ones I want to read there!

Mark Manson’s If Self-Discipline Feels Difficult, Then You’re Doing It Wrong post struck a chord as the thesis is that “Ultimately, self-discipline is not based on willpower or self-denial, but it’s actually based on the opposite: self-acceptance.” and that “once the moral judgments are removed, feeling bad because you relapsed on the cookies and cream can simply be a reminder or motivator to address the underlying issue.” Identical thesis (but somewhat different means to reach it) to what I read about in Radical Acceptance this week.

Just for fun, watch this video of the kids spinning around a tilt ‘o whirl if you need a pick me up.

Last but not least, check out what I’m up to now.
