Winter time

12.21 Winter Solstice

I started this on the winter solstice, and it took a few days to finish, but it feels like a fitting mood piece post-Christmas.

I used a few new techniques on this illustration, which I learned for Affinity Designer (thanks, ArtistWright), namely the Warp and Knife tools. I was happy with how it turned out, despite being lost in the woods at times while I was working on it.

The challenge of working on vector art illustrations like this is that it’s as much science as it is art. The art part, the aesthetic combination of shapes and color, is obvious, I guess. The science, though, the part about understanding how to use your tools and organize them to achieve the desired effects, is just as important.

I’m not the best at these illustrations, but I’m getting better. More importantly, I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of making them.
