October is almost over, but I’m still surprised to see all the Christmas stuff up in the stores. Almost as surprised as I am to be listing Wyclef in the title of this post. I guess that means the Christmas music will start soon too, but not yet, dammit. There is too much other good stuff to listen to.
I’ve gradually started to play more music via Bandcamp, and even have an album on the list this month that isn’t available on Spotify at all (Oiro Pena). I’d like to have more diverse sources for playing, buying, and listening to music. Something that feels more connected to the artists.
The Bandcamp listening parties where the artist is on and chatting, and YouTube and other live streams, kind of do this but it seems like it’s still all separated on different channels/sites/apps and the mental tax of trying to wade through it all is too much friction IMO.
Anyway, enough of that. Here are the albums that really grabbed me this month. Enjoy!
Oiro Pena – Béke
Such a great spiritual jazz album that fits right into my Pharoae Sanders kick and the fall season. My morning soundtrack.
Kiefer – Memory Bomb
Super cool jazz fusion (funk, hip-hop, r&b elements) album. Really liking this.
Wyclef Jean – Q Theory – Quantum Leap, Vol. 2
I guess Wyclef has a whole seven-part album series he’s working on, and this is one of them? I don’t know about the others, but this one is amazing and utterly unexpected.
Balthvs – Manifest
I dont’ know how you say their name, but the psychedelic, mostly instrumental rock is on point.
J. Rawls – Dig, Sample, Chop, Sequence
It’s not easy to make a great instrumental beat album. This one nails it.
