Dog days done

IMG 0544

For now, at least.

We have had a puppy living with us for the past six weeks. We thought she might be with us forever when we chose her to move in, but ultimately decided to be her foster family rather than her forever family. After many weeks of caring for her, going to adoption events, and meeting potential families that didn’t work out, we found the one, and she moved in with her new family yesterday. It was bittersweet to have changed course (we grew to love having this pup with us), but we’re super happy about how things turned out in the end.

Having a dog is fun, but it’s a big commitment. Having a puppy is even more so. We knew that before we started going down the path of fostering/adopting a rescue. We got through the hardest part (potty and sleep training), and we eventually settled into a good routine. The challenge for us was that we had barely settled into our previous (new) routine. We weren’t ready to give up our still-new routines and completely reorient our travel and weekend plans, as is inevitably required for a furry new family member. To use an apt pun, we bit off more than we could chew.

The benefits of having a dog in a family are immense. We’re happy to have helped a rescue organization and given a dog in need a home, even if just temporarily. We’ll miss the goofy, rolly-polly, zoomy energy and cuddles that dogs provide. Maybe one day we’ll try again.
