I remember using WordPress when it first came out in college and loving it. My first blog back then (check out the original designs) has evolved to this blog today, and I never gave much thought to the open-source nature of the software running it. Even when I joined Automattic nearly seven years ago, I joined because I loved helping people publish creative things online. The fact that I was helping do that on open-source software was interesting in that it was the opposite end of the spectrum from my previous employer, Microsoft, but it wasn’t the primary reason I was there.
Over time, though, it’s become clear that open-source is cool and really, REALLY important.
Automattic recently released a film about open-source software, what the internet is for, and who owns it. You should check it out.
Be an owner, not just a tenant!
