I love good coffee. I will pay lots of money for fancy beans and fancy preparation. I will also not think twice about reheating a cup of coffee brewed in the morning in the microwave or having some instant coffee if offered. I can be both a coffee nerd and unfussy about my coffee. It feels best not to take it too seriously.
That being said, I think it’s cool to be really into something. I like nerding out about things and going really deep into something I love. I appreciate exceptional quality. I certainly will grind some beans to the proper coarseness when I’m able. But everything has its limits, and the line between appreciation and snobbishness is an easy one to cross.
For example, there are lots of opinions about reheating coffee in the microwave. It changes it’s chemical makeup!! It ruins it entirely!! It’s undrinkable!! If you are getting annoyed at someone’s tolerance for the bitterness of their caffeinated beverage, maybe it’s time to rethink your priorities. Take anything really: movies, beer, video games, pizza, chocolate. You name it, and there will always people on both ends of the spectrum: the quality zealots, those that don’t care what they get, and the ones in the middle that don’t take it too seriously and enjoy something for what it is.
Which one do you want to be?
