Sun Never Sets Relay

sun never sets 5k relay

Every year, a group of dedicated runners at the company I work with (come join us) organizes a 24-hour relay. The twist is that everyone at the company is fully remote, so we take turns “handing off the baton” virtually as the sun circles the globe. For a full day, there is at least one (and usually several) people at the company running. Today was the latest in the series.

How it works is that we all sign-up for one 24-hour slot that we’re committed to run. When we’re ready to start, we share a pic in Slack and when we’re done, we share another, and we hand off to the next runner(s). As the day progresses, we’ll all share more details on how our run went as a comment on one of our internal blogs (we have thousands of them, this one is a Fitness-focused one). It’s amazing to see all the faces of colleagues (many of which I’ve never met) and glimpses into where they live as the race progresses. As I scroll the post tonight, I go from Spain to London to South Africa to Germany to Boston to Italy and on and on…

It’s not a race, and it isn’t about running a certain pace (walking is fine too!), it’s just about doing something together despite the miles that separate us, and it makes my day every year.
