Forget yourself

the eyes and the impossible

My daughter has a habit of giving me books that knock me over.

The latest was The Eyes and The Impossible by David Eggers. It’s a joy to read and contains passages that I have been thinking about for days after, like this one:

Every reasonable creature knows that the worst thing any creature can do all day is think of themselves. If there are troubles in your mind, you should think first of the troubles of others; it is the essence of liberation. That is, freedom begins the moment we forget ourselves.

I can instantly relate to this. It might be the best thing I’ve read all year.
