Eddie Chacon, Butcher Brown, and more of my favorite albums from January 2024

28.01 Leo Takami Next Door album recreation

The 59-year-old singer of Charles & Eddie fame is back with a second album of tightly written melodies and abstract tracks that draw you in to a rich, heady world

Eddie Chacon: Sundown review by Alexis Petridis in The Guardian

Here are the albums that inspired me this past month.

Eddie Chacon – Sundown

One of several albums I missed in 2023, this “comeback” album from the legendary R&B singer has such a cool chill vibe, and I can’t stop playing it along with the last album from 2020. It was produced by John Carroll Kirby, who does awesome work.

Greg Foat & Gigi Masin – Dolphin

I hadn’t heard of either of these artists until seeing this on KEXP DJ Noel Brass Jr.’s best of 2023 list. From Pitchfork: “The UK jazz pianist Greg Foat deftly balances the rhythmic and ambient poles of his sound on his collaborative album with veteran Italian artist Gigi Masin.” My favorite morning album this month.

Butcher Brown – Solar Music

Everything this band puts out is dynamite. A blend of jazz, hip-hop, and R&B, all done so well.

Leo Takami – Next Door

Another KEXP find, this is a chill Saturday-afternoon-reading-a-book type of album. From Pitchfork: “The Tokyo guitarist and pianist channels jazz, fusion, and Japanese environmental music as he deepens the emotional resonance of his music while maintaining its soothing atmosphere.”

Hus Kingpin & 9th Wonder – The Supergoat

How many times has 9th Wonder been on my list with yet another MC that is shockingly great over his beats? LOTS (wassup Musalini). For good reason, too. This one is bangin’.

Other albums that found their way to me (and stayed) this month:

I love discovering new music and hope sharing my finds inspires you to check out something different (and support the artists you love). Happy listening. ✌️
