“I was in Georgia during the time of Dungeon Family coming up, and that turned out to be a big shifting point in hip-hop. Dungeon Family, OutKast, CeeLo, Organized Noize”, concurs Swilley, “…they kind of allowed for us to exist. We feel comfortable to do what we do now because of people like that, and I think we’re just trying to carry that torch.” Evans counters: “We are the torch!”
Revival Season
Here are my favorite albums from May, enjoy!
Tune-Yards – Better Dreaming
I love Tune-Yards and their new album is giving off some perfect energy for the start of the summer.
DARGZ – Friends & Family
Kinda electronic leaning along with some funk and jazz elements. This producer’s music is hard to describe but easy to love.
Revival Season – Formless
One of my favorite things in hip-hop right now. So. Good.
Flying Mojito Bros – Just Passing Through
Such a fun album. From their Bandcamp: FMB has gained a growing US fanbase thanks to their unique style, dubbed Desert Disco and Outlaw House—a redefined Americana sound that moves from poolside vibes to the dancefloor.
Anthony Naples – Scanners
Some electronica house vibes.
Chaos in the CBD – A Deeper Life
I heard this described as “meditative house”. It starts slow but ramps up over time. Great headphones album.
Also, I must give a special mention to this live on KEXP performance by Heiroglyphics which renewed my listening of their classic album Full Circle. Wow.
Other albums that found their way to me (and stayed) this month:
- Now Always Fades – Into The Doldrums
- Night Heron – ESCAPISM
- Duval Timothy – wishful thinking
- Cole Pulice – Land’s End Eternal
- Surprise Chef – Superb
I love discovering new music and hope sharing my finds inspires you to check out something different (and support the artists you love). Happy listening. ✌️
