Six times in six years

IMG 9172

Over the course of the past 7 days I’ve run a marathon, celebrated my wife’s birthday, and moved into a new house. It’s been a busy month, but that’s nothing compared to the past 6 years.

My son and I were counting the number of times we’ve moved since our move to Scotland in 2019 (really the earliest he can remember) and it surprised me how much when we listed them out:

  1. From the USA to Scotland in 2019
  2. From rental to house in 2020
  3. From house to stay with family in 2022
  4. From staying with family back to (renovated) house in 2022
  5. From Scotland to the USA in 2024
  6. From rental to new house in 2025

That works out to a move every year for the past six years.

These are not little moves, but ones that involved packing up and/or selling all of our belongings. All the moves have been self-inflicted and for good reasons, or at least we thought so at the time. Now that a few days have passed since we’ve moved again, I was kind of struck by how easy this last move was for everyone in the family. Sure, it was a ton of work, but we’re basically fully moved and everyone is operating normally. I would even say everyone is better than normal.

Moving is challenging, but there is also something undeniably energizing about it. Cleansing. It’s also been a fantastic experience for the kids to go through. They are pretty great at dealing with change at this point. The only thing is, now that we’ve moved so many times, I wonder if we’ll be able to stop. Could we be addicted to moving?

I might be the only one wondering this so soon after this particular move. Others in the family that we most certainly are stopping the moving train now.

Case in point is this text from my wife last week: We are NEVER moving again. 😆

Ok, fair enough. I’m good to stay put for a long time now, too.
