Thank you and I’m sorry

“Thank you” and “I’m sorry” are both complete sentences. Often, those two words are all that is needed. If I could add one more, it would be “Please.”

I was recently inspired by this short post from Seth Godin and a brief excerpt from Wherever I Wind Up.

“The longer I live, the more I come to believe that the ability to say the words “I’m sorry” is one of the greatest healing agents in the world.”

R.A. Dickey and Wayne Coffey, Wherever I Wind Up

My wife and I try to remind our kids of these words every day, and need reminding ourselves.

I think I got it from my Mom, who can’t even ask Alexa or Siri anything without saying “please” at the end. She even says “thank you” after the AI responds and isn’t “listening” anymore. It doesn’t matter, though; it just feels wrong without it, and I appreciate that.

Your Mom reminds me of me! My wife teased me once saying I say “thank you” way too much, like when I thank her for a meal she cooked.

I believe you can never show too much gratitude. Not only is it good for the one receiving the thanks, but it’s good for the soul (for the one giving thanks).
