Johnny Blue Skies, Common & Pete Rock, and more of my favorite albums from Junely (June and July) 2024

sturgill simpson passage du desir

“[Johnny Blue Skies album Passage Du Desir is], all at once, a stroke of outlaw country genius and a massive, psychedelic vacuum of singer-songwriter reckonings and pensive, concerto swells. I wouldn’t call Passage du Desir a comeback. No, this is a recalibration firing on all cylinders—its only imperfection being that it ends.” – Paste

Man, so much great music has been released over the past two months while I’ve been moving. Seeing as how it was May when I last shared my favorite albums, I’m doing a two-for-one here, an extra-long list.

Here are the albums that provided me with a soundtrack to moving country and setting up shop again in Junely (pronounced “June lie” if ya didn’t know). 😉

Johnny Blue Skies (aka Sturgill Simpson) – Passage Du Desir

This album set me off on a massive Sturgill Simpson kick that I’m still on (see A Sailor’s Guide to Earth). The modern country vibes fit perfectly in the new Carolina diggs.

Common & Pete Rock – The Auditorium Vol. 1

SO GOOOOOOD!

mynameisntjmack – mynameisnt

In my top 10 this year without a doubt. “tryna find my peace and move a lil less angry” 🔥

Oddisee – And Yet Still

musclecars – Sugar Honey Iced Tea!

Bonny Light Horseman – Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free

Keeping the country-ish vibes going. This double album is really great.

NxWorries – Why Lawd?

Julius Rodriquez – Evergreen

Super jazz album.

Previous Industries – Service Merchandise

I could listen to these dudes rap all day.

Eric Hilton – Out of the Blur

Great ambient album for the morning.

Blanka – Birds

Fantastic jazzy beats here.

JasonMartin & DJ Quik – CHUPACABRA

Joe Goddard – Harmonics

Freeway & Jake One – Stimulus Package 2

RJD2 – Visions Out Of Limelight

Liam Bailey & Blundetto – Heavy Soul

Reggae and dub vibes. I love Liam.

salute – TRUE MAGIC

House jams.

Rakim – G.O.D.’S NETWORK – REB7RTH

Denzel Curry – King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2

I still need to dig into this more, but it’s definitely something that Alex Toussaint would play…an album to flex on.

ARI TSUGI – SIMULTANEITY

Cool jazz vibes.

Bodysync – NUTTY

Super bangin’ house dance music album.

I love discovering new music and hope sharing my finds inspires you to check out something different (and support the artists you love). Happy listening. ✌️
