If you are planning to ship anything as part of an international move, you’ll need to get pretty good at visualizing what cubic feet look like. I’ve now gotten some practice in this arena, but it’s still surprising how little space a few things can go in for a lot of money.
As part of our upcoming move, I’ve been getting quotes from various moving companies. As you might expect, after seeing the cost of each quote, we’ve been paring down what we really need to bring into progressively smaller and smaller spaces.
We already thought we were being quite efficient by not planning to bring any furniture, bedding, dishes, etc. However, even with (what we thought was) a small amount of stuff, it still added up to somewhere around 505-515 cubic feet, which is about the size of the office area we have our Peloton in.

The cheapest shipping for that would cost us over £5k (i.e. north of $5.3k in USD), not including any insurance. Ouch.
So, after another round of paring down, we got it down to 162 cubic feet, which is the space my kids bunk beds fit into. Around £2k for that.

With a little more haggling, we added a tiny bit more space, bumping things up to closer to 200 cubic feet. That is about the space of our wardrobe and shelves wall in the master bedroom.

Here’s hoping what little we are shipping arrives in less than three months and in good shape.
