Oddisee, Charlie Crockett, and more of my favorite albums from January 2023

charley crockett

I love discovering new music and hope that by sharing my monthly finds it inspires you to listen to something different. I’m continuing the monthly tradition in 2023 and if you want to see past editions, check out 2022 and 2021.

January tends to be a great music month as I go through best of lists like KEXP DJ’s top albums of 2022 or NPRs best albums of 2022 and listen to things that might have skipped by me. This month I have a lot of things to share, so let’s get on with it!

Oddisse – To What End

The first album in way too long from one of my favorite producer-rappers. No. Favorite artitsts period. This was released this year and has a strong chance to remain on my best of list at the end of this year.

Charley Crockett – The Man from Waco

Country western, blues, and a little funk mixed in. I love the songwriting, the musicianship, and the hustle from Charley Crockett. Such a good album from last year that I didn’t give enough time to until now.

Butcher Brown – Butcher Brown Presents Triple Trey

A hip-hop, jazz, funk band that is one of my favorite missed-in-2022 discoveries. These guys go for it!

Asake – Mr. Money With The Vibe

I love the energy of afrobeats music and this was another release that I missed in 2022 from an upcoming star in that genre. Such a great vibe.

Little Simz – NO THANK YOU

This is as close to a hip-hop album from Sault as we’ve got so far, and it’s a beast. A rebuke of the music industry in beautiful beats and rhymes.

Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio – Cold As Weiss

I am definitely no authority on the matter but this just has the air of a funk and blues masterclass.

Leland Whitty – Anyhow

One of the members of BadBadNotGood puts out a solo record that is reminiscent of their bands masterful release Talk Memory (2021) and just as engaging. Magic.

Waajeed – Memoirs of Hi-Tech Jazz

I missed this in late 2022 and wish I hadn’t. A stand-out instrumental jazz album that buzzes with energy.

Open Mike Eagle – Component System with the Auto Reverse

I listened to this a couple times in 2022 but it really grabbed me this month. A superb hip-hop album with so much depth. I hear something new each time I listen.

Julius Rodriguez – Let Sound Tell All

Great jazz record. Nothing else to say really, I love it and can’t stop playing this song.

That’s all for now.

Let me know if any of this grabs you like it did me. Happy listening. ✌️
