As a performer, [Dave Guy] can stand among the most vital trumpet players of our time as he seamlessly blends tradition, with contemporary, with a stunning performance that oozes passion. Ultimately, what makes Guy’s work most impressive is his ability to craft an album that you can easily hear your favourite MC spit over, while still including just enough jazz indulgences; ultimately making Ruby as unique as it is impressive.
from SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: DAVE GUY – RUBY
Lots of great music came out in October, which makes this month’s list beautifully looong. Enjoy!
Nicolay – Terra Firma
“A mixture of soul, dance, hip-hop, and even a nod at house.” A perfect soundtrack to my sunny fall vibes in North Carolina.
LP Giobbi – Dotr
LP Giobbi is a new artist to me, and this album knocked me out. It blends everything I love about electronic, house, instrumental, downbeat, and soul into a beautiful whole.
Dave Guy – Ruby
Great great great (great) hip-hop inspired jazz album.
Tremendous Aron – Carlos & Lola
Another jazz gem. I can’t get enough of this guy Tremendous Aron. This EP is fantastic when paired with A Drama On Richard Street (I had that on my Spring 2024 list), which is meant to be Side A of this Side B.
Ben Böhmer – Bloom
I guess you call this “indie electronica and melodic house music”. I call it “great for any time of the day” music.
Public Service Broadcasting – The Last Flight
Don’t let the fact that this is a concept album about Amelia Earhart scare you away. This is fantastic.
Garrett T. Capps & NASA Country – Everyone Is Everyone
My rock and country feels for the month are strong with this one. Great song writing and musicianship all around.
J. Sands – Cash Flow, Buddha & Shelter
The elders of hip-hop continue to impress. This has been my go-to rap album over the last month.
Caribou – Honey
Super dope collection of dance tracks that is, as one of my friends would like to say, a kick in the pants.
Ezra Collective – Dance, No One’s Watching
One of my favorite (very) funky jazz artists returns with another great LP. Can’t miss with this one.
Other albums that found their way to me (and stayed) this month:
- Give Em Soul & 9th Wonder – ONE FORTY SEVEN
- Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad – Jazz Is Dead 021
- Jamie XX – In Waves
- The Smile – Cutouts
- Phantogram – Memory Of A Day
- The Headhunters – The Stunt Man
- Protoje – The Jamaican Situation
- Fashawn – YOU OWE US WITH INTEREST
I love discovering new music and hope sharing my finds inspires you to check out something different (and support the artists you love). Happy listening. ✌️
