Our dog Rubee got a nasty cut on her leg while she and I were out running. She ran off into the woods towards the end of our route, same thing she’s done a hundred times, but when she came back she was limping and bleeding quite badly. After an emergency vet appointment, they booked her in for stitches right away (which involved giving her general anaesthetic) and discovered she had severed an artery in her leg. Ouch!
She’s been on a variety of antibiotics, pain killers, and sedatives for over a week now while also being mostly resigned to her bed.

My experience with injuries and sicknesses is that the physical pain/discomfort isn’t the worst part, it’s the fact that you can’t live normally and do what you want to be doing. This has got to be doubly true for a dog.
Of course, sometimes a forced break is good. Nothing to do now but wait. Everything is healing up well and she’ll be back out with me running very soon.
