What I learned last week (#151): three o’clock

Highland cow in a field

A weekly selection of what I was reading, drawing, writing, and doing.

Quote I thought was very true:

Three o’clock is always too late or too early for anything you want to do.

How the mRNA COVID vaccines work:

Woah! 🤯

George Lucas’s writing tower:

According to Taylor, Lucas worked from old photographs of the house to reconstruct a two-story tower, including a fireplace and wrap-around windows offering a scenic view of nearby Mount Tam. It was in this tower, in the two years that followed, that Lucas sequestered himself most afternoons to sit at a three-sided desk he built out of old doors and grind out a new script for a movie concept that had long fascinated him, but was proving immensely difficult to reduce into a digestible story. His working title for the project: “The Star Wars.”

The story of free diver Alenka Artnik:

The notion of free diving is terrifying to me. This story is not only great, but the presentation is beautiful to scroll through and experience.

Daić considers someone who is able to swim 75 meters underwater, three lengths of a typical pool, by the end of his weekend course to be an excellent diver. On the course’s second day, Alenka swims one length, two lengths, three lengths, and keeps going. At 92 meters one of her fins falls off. Instead of ending her dive she turns around underwater, retrieves the fin, puts it back on, and completes the length. She is angry when she gets out, explaining she wanted to reach 120 meters.

Jaws drop around the pool. Most of the others did not even make it to 50 meters.

Who is this woman?

Stay focused:

Nothing new here, but some interesting tidbits to chew on. I’m always better when I’m focused on one thing at a time.

In 2005, the BBC reported on a research study, funded by Hewlett-Packard and conducted by the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of London, that found, “Workers distracted by e-mail and phone calls suffer a fall in IQ more than twice that found in marijuana smokers.”

What I wrote and drew about this week:

What I did, was reminded of, or was thankful for last week:

  • We celebrated Thanksgiving by going into Glasgow on the train to see the lights and eat at a fancy-ish Thai restaurant. This is the start of a new tradition for Thanksgiving in the UK for us. 👍🏼
  • I logged my 100th ride on the Peloton last week. Milestone reached! I still really enjoy having that bike and now I get a “century club” tshirt. I don’t need another tshirt but I’ll take the achievement.

Last but not least, check out what I’m up to now.

  1. Regarding free diving, did you ever see the Luc Besson film The Big Blue? It was a favorite of mine when it came out in the 80’s, and there’s a documentary about the diver call The Dolphin Man that’s very good too.

    1. The Big Blue was mentioned in the article but I haven’t seen it. Thanks for the links!

  2. I’ve just read that whole piece about the free diver. Amazing story. Completely absorbed by it.

    1. It was so cool how they presented it right? Loved the mix of media there. Glad you liked it. 😃

      1. Yes, that was mesmerising.
